When the opportunity to sail to Alaska aboard Holland America’s Eurodam presented itself, I knew it was time to embark on a memorable cruise experience. For those expecting a wild, party-filled cruise, Holland America might not be the right choice. This cruise line is not about flashy water slides or non-stop parties. Instead, it offers a more refined, calm atmosphere, ideal for family reunions, multigenerational trips, and friend groups looking for a relaxing getaway. While the ship does cater largely to an older demographic, I found the range of ages on board to be diverse, making it appealing for all generations.
Embarkation and First Impressions: A Smooth Start to the Adventure
Embarkation at the Seattle Cruise Terminal was a bit crowded, especially with the large number of passengers arriving at the same time. I had a personal item and a carry-on, which allowed me to skip the check-in luggage line. However, for those with larger bags, expect to spend some extra time in the line to have your luggage processed. Holland America’s check-in process included biometric scans, but unlike some other cruise lines that offer wristbands, Eurodam guests had their faces scanned for embarkation and disembarkation, which felt a bit outdated.
Once aboard, the Eurodam immediately impressed with its elegant interior. The decor was reminiscent of a refined, luxurious home, with blonde wood paneling and Greco-Roman art adding a sense of classic charm. The mood aboard was calm and sophisticated, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
The Cabin: A Comfortable and Scenic Escape
I stayed in a verandah stateroom, which came with a private outdoor balcony. This feature was particularly useful during scenic cruising days in places like Glacier Bay National Park, where I could step out and enjoy the breathtaking views of glaciers like Margerie Glacier right from my room.
The room itself wasn’t very large, but it was well-appointed. It featured a small closet, a neat bathroom, and ample counter space for toiletries. The bed was comfortable, consisting of two twin beds pushed together, and the room had plenty of outlets, including USB ports for convenience. While the decor felt slightly outdated, everything in the room was comfortable and well-maintained.
Dining: A Culinary Adventure at Sea
Dining aboard the Eurodam was a highlight of the trip. The ship offers both complimentary and specialty dining options. The two main dining venues are the Lido Market, a buffet-style cafeteria, and the more formal Dining Room (also known as the Main Dining Room, or MDR), where I enjoyed most of my meals. The MDR offers an extensive menu, ranging from classic dishes to more adventurous options like escargot. On certain days, Alaska brunches were offered in lieu of separate breakfast and lunch services, a special treat that was followed by afternoon tea.
In addition to the main dining areas, there are a couple of quick-service eateries on board. New York Pizza serves delicious thin-crust pizza, and Dive-In is perfect for those craving burgers and hot dogs. Both offer quick meals when you need a fast snack. Room service is available 24/7 with both free and paid options.
For a more special dining experience, Eurodam has three specialty restaurants: Canaletto, an Italian restaurant; Pinnacle Grill, a steakhouse; and Tamarind, offering Asian cuisine. I dined at all three and found each one to be flavorful and satisfying. Canaletto was the most affordable, serving Italian dishes like osso buco and gelato. Pinnacle Grill offered high-quality steaks and seafood, while Tamarind had exceptional service and delicious Asian-inspired dishes.
Entertainment and Programming: A Relaxed Yet Engaging Atmosphere
When it comes to entertainment, Holland America doesn’t focus on over-the-top shows. Instead, the ship’s evening programming was a blend of musical productions, comedy sets, and magic shows, with performances featuring classic songs and humor. While not mind-blowing, they were entertaining and a great way to pass the time.
Scenic Cruising: The Breathtaking Highlight
The highlight of the trip for me was the scenic cruising day in Glacier Bay National Park. Holland America has special permission to enter the park, making this a rare and exciting feature of the trip. As we cruised through, I marveled at the stunning glacial ice and learned about the glaciers from onboard National Park Service rangers. It was a truly magical experience, especially with traditional Dutch pea soup served on the deck to keep us warm during the chilly weather.

Overall, my Alaska cruise aboard Holland America’s Eurodam was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The ship offers a sophisticated atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent educational programming, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a relaxing, family-friendly cruise to Alaska.
