The Matanuska Glacier is one of Alaska's premiere destinations. Â At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide it is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by road. Â It also is boasts one of the most accessible areas to walk on of any glacier in Alaska. Â Marvel at ice that formed thousands of years ago high in the Chugach Mountains.

Your day will start with a magnificent scenic drive along the Glenn Highway with stunning mountain vistas and plenty of time for photo stops. Â Next we will drive to the toe of the glacier to dawn our ice cleats and begin exploring the glacier by foot. Each day is unique due to the dynamic nature of the glacier. We generally spend two hours and walk three miles on the ice.Â After exploring the glacier we will have lunch at a local eatery with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding scenery.Â Each tour will be customized to suit your groups interest. Bill was the best guide ever. We walked out on the Glacier & he gave us information about the Glacier & surrounding area the whole way. Highly recommend him as a guide.

My family and I went on the Winter Glacier Hike on the Matanuska glacier today. Matt was our guide. We had an awesome day! Before our trip, all of our questions were answered very promptly. Greatland Adventures took care of every detail. They provided all of our outerwear, down to hand warmers for the gloves. They even provided boots, so that we did not need to buy heavy-duty cold weather boots beforehand. We did provide our own face coverings, but were advised of this ahead of time and also advised which kind would be best for our hike. Our hike was amazing on the glacier and Matt was a wonderful and attentive guide. The lunch afterwards was in a great location with food that was perfect after our hike. I can’t think of anything that could have been done differently to make the day better. Thanks to Greatland Adventures for a wonderful day!

We had a great experience with Greatland Adventures. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. Would 100% recommend to anyone interested in a glacier tour and I would definitely book with them for any future trips to Anchorage.

Greatland as a company was so easy to work with. My daughter age 9 had wanted to see the northern lights on the trip. Unfortunately our window of opportunity had poor visibility and Greatland was proactive and suggested the Matanuska Glacier tour. Slam Dunk! Bill was a great guide and clearly loves what he does. He never stopped educating and quizzing the group! What a great and memorable day. We hiked the glacier in -6 weather with couples from around the world and Bill. Bill was as excited as the group, taking pictures like the rest of us. This will be a cherished memory for my daughter and I forever. Zero hesitation in recommending Greatland Adventures for your trip. I'm cheap and was very happy with the value we received. Would not hesitate to do it again.

What an amazing day! We had perfect weather, visibility, and true perfect guide! Bill made our day so much more special! He is incredibly knowledgeable about the area, the glacier, and nature in general. You can tell he loves what he does and has a passion to share it with others. My daughter and I were the only ones on the tour and we essentially had the glacier to ourselves. It was awe inspiring! Thank you Bill for making our tour perfect!

Great team to work with in getting the Matanuska Glacier tour together. Make sure you ask for Jonathan as your guide. You will learn more about Alaska and the intricacies of your tour than you could on researching yourself. Visit the Glacier during the winter so that the number of tourists is low, you can walk on the lake and get up close and "into" the glacier. Not to say that the summer is worse (wasn't there). Prepare for an exercise, you're muscles and heart rate are going to get a workout.

This tour was amazing! The area just received fresh snow, the wind was non-existent and the sun was out for part of, which all made for a great tour! Mother nature is truly amazing!!

Our Greatland Adventures’ Matanuska Glacier tour early this month was awesome, exciting, and fun. The tour is inclusive of the transportation (hotel pickup and dropoff downtown Anchorage hotels), gear or winter clothing (coat or jacket, bib or winter pants, and shoe spike), snacks and lunch at Long Rifle Lodge. Jonathan, our guide, was trivia-filled and informative. I learned a lot from him, which made the more-than-2hr ride went by fast and also thought-provoking: Alaska’s revenue sources and its effect to economy and to state and climate, events in Alaska, Alaska’s history like 1964 earthquake. He kept the pace very good such that we get to know more of Matanuska Glacier and its character/parts up close (ie., what’s a crevasse and erratic), and have time to take photos and explore further (eg., cracks and cryoconite), while keeping us safe within explored zone. I never thought I’d be warm in Alaska in Winter but I did and sweat under my shirt. Jonathan assisted me to stay physically able and be at temperature-safe (ie., not passed out or flustered), as he was helpful with all of us in the tour. I left Alaska wanting more - looking forward to my next visit, and this is due in part with my Greatland Adventures. Their office is very reachable with Ms. Sandy (who assisted me twice to find my beanie and balaclava). I highly recommend Greatland Adventures, and would avail of their service/tour again when back in Alaska.

Experience of a lifetime getting up close and personal with a glacier. Amazing experience well worth the money. Equipment and snow gear provided was in excellent condition. Sandy in the office was very helpful and Jonathan Douglass was very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job in finding the right balance between narrating the tour and letting us just experience the nature. Safety and conservation was always top of mind.
